I was a major Jim Ramstad supporter in this district, and am a bit troubled at what has occurred in the past two years. What assurances will I get that your voting record will mirror the legacy of the Honorable Jim Ramstad (and not that of Michele Bachmann)?

Less spending has been a mantra of this election. What, specifically, would you cut. No vague, general answers please.

Jim Meffert
Jim Meffert (Jim Meffert for Congress) One specific reduction in spending that I would support would be to follow the recommendations of Secretary of Defense Gates regarding reining in Defense Department spending to the tune of a $100 billion savings over the next five years, which includes reducing dependence on military contractors, cutting overhead, improving efficiency in the purchase of military goods, and eliminating the Joint Forces Command.

Generally, I believe the most prudent course of action we can take to cut

How do you feel about stem cell research

Jim Meffert
Jim Meffert (Jim Meffert for Congress) Stem cell research has the potential to help millions of Americans who suffer from conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and many others. This research is also crucial for universities and biotechnology companies that are creating jobs while helping to alleviate human suffering.

If raising taxes is a part of your solution for the deficit problem, do you believe there are any negative consequences to the economy with such a policy change?
August 25, 2010 at 4:35 pm · Popout
Jim Meffert
Jim Meffert (Jim Meffert for Congress) In the last decade we have paid for two wars with five tax cuts, and that kind of irresponsible fiscal policy is a big part of why we are in this mess. Our deficit didn't appear overnight, and we're not going to solve it overnight. We have some very difficult choices ahead--about what we are investing in, our military engagements, entitlements, health care costs and more--but what we absolutely cannot do is continue to kick the can on restoring balance in our budget.

How would you propose to revise ESEA (NCLB) legislation in a way to be more supportive of public schools?
August 25, 2010 at 4:13 pm · Popout
Jim Meffert
Jim Meffert (Jim Meffert for Congress) Lonni - the current system does nothing but tear down teachers and public school administrators. There is so much we need to do to fix our education system, starting with returning to the core mission of ESEA and instituting systems of measurement that look at students' progress over time. We have to be able to answer that fundamental question of why some students are achieving at a certain rate while others are not. With a better understanding of why these gaps exist, we can then allocate our

A widely held belief is that this district would be best represented by a moderate. Is moderate a word that accurately describes you and why or why not?

Jim Meffert
Jim Meffert (Jim Meffert for Congress) Our district expects the kind of thoughtful leadership Jim Ramstad provided in Washington. He was engaged in important conversations across party lines and made his mark as someone who did not just follow the party agenda. That is the kind of leadership I'll provide in Congress. My whole career has been based on working with people of differing views to get things done, and I think that's the kind of voice our district needs in Washington.

How will you handle pork barrel spending and kickbacks? Will you vote for bills that contain such measures?
August 24, 2010 at 10:13 am · Popout
Jim Meffert
Jim Meffert (Jim Meffert for Congress) Hi Jonathan, good question. With the enormous deficit we are facing, Congress needs to do everything possible to cut waste and unnecessary spending--and unfortunately in many ways we are far from where we should be on that front.

Transparency should be priority one. While not all earmarks are inherently bad, they should all be clearly identified and not hidden in unrelated bills. I'll support efforts to clean up the bills that Congress votes on, and make sure they only contain pro

Jim Meffert
Jim Meffert (Jim Meffert for Congress) Hi Mary. There are a lot of things we need to do, and making sure every child has the opportunity to succeed has as much or more to do with what goes on outside the classroom as inside it. We need to make sure kids are ready to learn by the time they get to school, make sure their nutritional and health needs are met, ensure their safety at home and at school, and encourage parents to get engaged in every step of the process. As to what's happening in the classroom, we have to figure out how to
